Maggie Walker

Maggie Walker

 

Maggie Walker was the first woman to found a bank in the United States. She also established the Saint Luke Emporium, a department store located in the Jackson Ward section of Richmond. Maggie Walker was a leader in the Richmond black community; she is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Richmond.  

John Jasper

John Jasper, philosopher and pastor of Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Church, in Richmond, Virginia.

The most celebrated of his sermons was "De Sun Do Move".

Joseph Bryant

 

Joseph Bryan

Publisher of Richmond newspapers. Father of John S. Bryan and grandfather of David Tennant Bryan. Bryan Park was named after him.

During the war of Northern Aggression in 1864, Joseph Bryan was a Confederate soldier and rode with Colonel John Singleton Mosby, "The Grey Ghost" and was wounded in battle.

Mary Triplett

John B. Mordecai was enfuriated when the Enquirer published a steamy poem which he thought was about Miss Triplett. A chance meeting at The Richmond Club between John B. Mordecai and Page McCarty resulted in a duel which left one man dead and the other tortured for life.
